Most people give little thought to hydration: they drink when thirsty or  according to habit (mealtimes, morning coffee, afternoon tea, etc) and any excess fluid is lost as urine. These simple physiological processes work fairly well and water intake is closely matched to water losses. For some individuals, though, there are challenges, either on the intake side or on the output side or on both, that make it difficult to maintain good hydration status.
